LEED Certification and ESD Flooring

At SelecTech, we’re committed to putting out products that are not only the best option for our customers but also for the environment. Built spaces are the largest consumers of energy, so we want to do everything we can to reduce our environmental impact when we contribute to new or existing construction. We have many ways of doing that with our StaticStop ESD flooring products, from recycling our materials to pursuing environmentally positive certifications. There are multiple programs and certifications manufacturers can pursue. In this article, we’re going to focus on LEED certification

Here’s a closer look at LEED certification and how it affects our ESD flooring products.

What is LEED certification?

LEED stands for “Leadership in  Energy and Environmental Design.” The certification program is a voluntary rating system from the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). Buildings can earn LEED certification by using LEED-certified products in their construction. If a building is LEED-certified, that means it has an energy-efficient design.

The USGBC awards LEED certification to buildings based on a variety of sustainability objectives. Meeting these objectives earns the construction points. Any building that scores between 40 and 110 achieves LEED certification within four possible levels:

  • Certified: 40-49 points
  • Silver: 50-59 points
  • Gold: 60-70 points
  • Platinum: 80-110 points

Buildings can earn LEED points for avoiding excessive water usage, using responsibly sourced materials, or using materials with low VOCs, among other things.

What are VOCs?

Flooring can earn a building LEED points by having low VOCs. VOCs are volatile organic compounds. They have high vapor pressure and low water solubility, meaning that materials that contain VOCs can release them into the air. These compounds are in many household products and building materials. In recent years, we have become more aware of the dangers of VOCs. With that knowledge, manufacturers are making an effort to reduce or eliminate them from their products. Thanks to the LEED certification program, all commercial and residential flooring materials are low-emitting, meaning they emit low levels of VOCs.
